The Origin and Significance of Zero

Zero has been axial in human development, but the origin and discovery of zero has never been satisfactorily addressed by a comprehensive, systematic and above all interdisciplinary research program. In this volume, over 40 international scholars explore zero under four broad themes: history; religion, philosophy & linguistics; arts; and mathematics & the sciences. Some propose that the invention/discovery of zero may have been facilitated by the prior evolution of a sophisticated concept of Nothingness or Emptiness (as it is understood in non-European traditions); and conversely, inhibited by the absence of, or aversion to, such a concept of Nothingness in the West. El cero ha sido axial en el desarrollo humano, pero su origen y descubrimiento nunca han sido abordados satisfactoriamente por un programa de investigación exhaustivo, sistemático y, sobre todo, interdisciplinar. En este volumen, más de 40 especialistas internacionales exploran el cero en cuatro grandes temas: historia; religión, filosofía y lingüística; artes; y matemáticas y ciencias. Algunos proponen que la invención/descubrimiento del cero puede haberse visto facilitada por la evolución previa de un concepto sofisticado de la Nada o el Vacío (tal y como se entiende en las tradiciones no europeas); y a la inversa, inhibida por la ausencia o aversión a tal concepto de la Nada en Occidente.
