The first moves of a chess game are called opening. Knowing the different openings gives the hobbyist a safe and effective way to start the game. The different opening systems have been modified and refined throughout the history of chess, thus forming a catalog from which game forms, recommendations, advice can be extracted... but fundamentally reliable structures to start the game. The previous step for a player to create his own repertoire is to know what the great masters have already studied.
