Edificio España
el peligro de la desigualdad
Premio Espasa 2022
Ruiz, Javier (1973- )
Edificio España is the portrait and denunciation of a growing inequality in our country. The gap between rich and poor is widening and has already overflowed the economy to extend to the world of politics -whose result is extreme polarization- and to that of democracy itself, with the birth of a "political precariat" of lower classes that they drop from the system and stop voting and being important. This inequality feeds on itself and is damaging the traditional social elevators: taxes no longer burden those who have more and education and pensions no longer guarantee promotion or social protection. The result is a building in which the richest earn more and the poorest have less and less, differences that are taking root in our community, so that those who are born poor cannot ascend and those who are born rich never stop being so. Inequality is also business and even affects freedom of expression, where the editorial lines begin to serve the great fortunes instead of the large audiences. This is the current state of our Edificio España. Urgent reforms are needed to prevent it from collapsing.
