El Cautivo de Málaga
Palomo Cruz, Alberto Jesús
There are images that become references for cities, acquiring the character of identity symbols that transcend their devotional value, so that they come to be assumed even by those who do not have religious concerns. Throughout Spain and, very specifically in Andalusia, we have plenty of examples and one of them is Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo, head of the penitential brotherhood that has its headquarters in the church of San Pablo, located in the neighborhood of the same name. The iconic print of the Lord in white has been imposed in Malaga to be transmuted into an entire banner that is displayed, either on the night of Holy Monday or on game afternoons at the Rosaleda. His image is impressively present in paintings or almanacs, in neighborhood stores, or in tiles on the facades of houses, but above all in the heart of the city.
