After the First World War, some Britons hope to rebuild their fortunes and prosper in the most distant countries of the Empire, especially in India. Captain Sam Wyndham, an experienced war veteran at Scotland Yard, lands in Calcutta and discovers that the metropolis meets all the requirements to kill him: unbearable humidity, unhealthy water, poisonous insects and, much worse, a progressive hatred of the indigenous to the settlers. Is this the cause of the murder of a high official in a shady alley of the underworld?
