Ensayo histórico sobre la violencia política

el rostro ambiguo del terrorismo

Benigno, Francesco

Generally, terrorism is understood as the deliberate will to sow terror by hitting the unarmed population considered an enemy. However, Francesco Benigno challenges this approach by turning to history. In fact, the production of "terror" has historically not been the only dimension of "terrorism" and, in this way, it can be better understood as the construction of a sensational event, capable of awakening the masses from their political lethargy, which the anarchists called "propaganda with the fact". At the same time, history teaches us that terrorism is also a war technique used in times of peace, the continuation of the policy with explosive means. The purpose of the terrorist gesture is, in other words, to outline, through an image polarized on the us-them axis, the scene of a war, defined in absolute terms as the clash between good and evil. The author of this book brilliantly gives body and substance to this historiographical thesis, leading the reader through very different times: from the Terror of the French Revolution to the anarchist bombs, from Russian populism to the Cold War, from the years of lead in Italy to the attacks of September 11.
