France, 1539. At the age of eleven, little Bertrande de Rols is married to Martin Guerre, son of a powerful landowner. After a while, following an argument with his father, Martin abandons his wife and young son and disappears without a trace for eight years. When he returns home, he finds a Bertrande who has difficulty recognizing her husband and even suspects that it is really him.
