La larga noche
XXXVIII Premio Jaén de Novela 2022
Pérez Azaústre, Joaquín
At dawn on August 29, 1947, the news spread through the streets of Linares and in the international press: Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez, Manolete, has died after being gored in the right thigh by the bull Islero. In the room are José Flores Camará, his proxy, almost a father to him; his swordsman, Guillermo González, with the telegrams of condolences; or his friend, the rejoneador Álvaro Domecq. Around the Hospital de los Marqueses de Linares, dozens of women cry in silence. Manolete has managed to embody, with his bullfighting, the seriousness of a collective duel: with his death, time ends, but it awakens a drama. Twelve years later, Lupe Sino returns from Mexico. That early morning in 1947 she was only able to access the hospital room to pray before the recumbent body of Manuel. In a different Madrid that still remembers them, Lupe meets up with old friends like Fernando Fernán Gómez and Perico Chicote, and travels, in a convertible, a city that tries to leave behind that same black and white past to which she tries to return.
