Nadie lo va a hacer por ti

The media has dubbed me the "Hero of the red swimsuit" or the "Hero of Mali". That day in June 2017, in a hotel complex on the outskirts of Bamako, I was able to repel the attack of a group of terrorists armed with AK-47s and save most of the people there. Only some time later have I been able to organize in my head what happened that day and what made me respond the way I did. In my missions in the Balkans, in the Middle East and in Africa, but also in my military training, in my education and in the principles that my family instilled in me, I gradually adopted values and preparation that have led me to be who I am. I believe that qualities such as a sense of duty, a vocation for service, temperance, emotional intelligence or leadership can be learned and improved, and that they are equally useful for a soldier as for any other citizen in their daily life.
